Recollections

This series of film stills emerged from archival footage of the village where I grew up, at the northernmost edge of the Netherlands. In collaboration with the Groninger Archieven, I revisited forgotten reels — damaged, discarded fragments that rarely enter the official record. By isolating these broken moments and giving them space, the focus shifts from individuals to the image itself — to what lingers between frames, in flicker and fracture. Villagers, caught in everyday gestures, become anonymous and equal — neither exceptional nor excluded, simply present. A quiet portrait of village life, shaped by absence, resilience, and the dignity of the overlooked. Recollections was also presented as a film performance with live music, shown at festivals and exhibitions.
